How Many Tiers Do I need for My Wedding Cake? Wedding Cake Sizes & Portions Explained

How Many Tiers Do I need for My Wedding Cake? Wedding Cake Sizes & Portions Explained
One of the questions I am asked most often when couples are planning their wedding cake is
"How many tiers do we actually need?"
It sounds like it should be an easy questions to answer, but there is actually much more to choosing your wedding cake size than simply counting your guests.
You might have 80 guests and all in love with a beautiful four-tier cake. Or perhaps you have 120 guests but prefer something more understated. Maybe you want a tall, impressive centrepiece but don't actually need every tier to be made from cake.
The good news is that there is no single rule that says your guest numbers must dictate the number of tiers you have.
Your wedding cake should be designed around your celebration, your venue, your style and of course, how much cake you would like to serve.
As a bespoke wedding cake designer, I can help you work through all of these elements so that your cake looks beautifully proportioned while providing the portions you need.
How many portions of wedding cake do I actually need?

The first thing to consider is your guest numbers.
If you are expecting 80 wedding guests, for example, you don't necessarily need a cake designed to provide exactly 80 portions.
Not every guest will necessarily have a slice, unless its good cake, which we proud ourselves on being, some guests might prefer to have a slice to take home.
There is also a difference between the number of portions you need and the physical size of cake you would like on display.
This is where choosing a bespoke wedding cake designer can make a real difference.
Rather than simply saying "80 guests means three tiers", I prefer to look at the whole picture.
Does the number of tiers depend on the number of guests?
Not necessarily.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about wedding cake sizes.
The number of tiers you choose is influenced by your required portions, but also by the overall look you want to create.
For example, a couple with 60 guests might choose a three-tier cake because they love the proportions and want their wedding cake to make a real statement.
Another couple with 100 guests might choose a different combination of tiers, perhaps with a smaller cutting cake or additional portions behind the scenes.
And if you have always dreamed of a magnificent four or five-tier wedding cake, there are ways to achieving that beautiful height without needing every tier to provide servings.
Your cake doesn't have to be dictated by a calculator.
It should look right for you.
A simple wedding cake size guide
As a very general starting point, your guest numbers might lead you towards something like this
Approx Guests | No of Tiers | Possible Cake Size |
30-40 guests | 1 - 2 tiers | tall 8" cake or tall 4" & 6" cake |
50-60 guests | 1 - 2 tiers | tall 10" or a standard 10" & 8" |
70-80 guests | 3 tiers | standard 9", 8" & 6" cake |
90 - 100 guests | 3 tiers | standard 6", 8", 10" cake |
100-120 guests | 3 tiers | double height 6", 8", 10" cake |
130+ guests | 4 - 5 tiers plus maybe an additional cutting cake | double height 4", 6", 8", 10" = approx 130 or 4", 6", 8", 10" & 12" double height approx 210 portions |
These are guidelines rather and strict rules - tall means 4 layers of cake inside - standard means 3 layers of cake inside.
The exact portions depend on the diameter and height of individual tiers, how the cake is cut and whether you want to provide a portion for every guest.
This is why I always recommend discussing your requirements before deciding on the final cake size.
What if I want a taller wedding cake

This is where things become particularly exciting from a design point of view.
Sometimes the cake you fall in love with simply needs more height to achieve the same proportions.
A tall wedding cake can look spectacular in a large room, particularly in a grand country house, luxury hotel, barn or marquee.
You might have plenty of guests but still want a relatively slim, elegant cake. Or you may have a smaller wedding and simply adore the drama of a tall multi-tier design.
In these situations, dummy tier can be incredibly useful.
What are dummy wedding cake tiers?
A dummy tier is a lightweight display tier that is decorated to look exactly like a real cake.
It allows us to create additional height, shape and impact without producing more edible cake than you actually need.
This can be particularly useful if you have fallen in love with the look of a four or five-tier cake but your wedding numbers don't require that much cake.
I have written more about this in my guide:
Are Dummy Wedding Cakes Tiers Really Cheaper? The Trust about Fake Wedding Cake Layers
The important thing to remember is that dummy tiers aren't about making your cake look "fake".
They are a design tool that allows us to create the proportions and statement you want.

Wedding cake size isn't just about portions
When I design a wedding cake, I am also thinking about the space in which it will be displayed.
A cake that looks perfectly proportioned in a photograph may look very different when placed on a large cake table in a grand venue.
Likewise, a huge five-tier cake may overwhelm a more intimate wedding.
Wedding Cake
I consider things such as:
Your approximate numbers of guests
The size and height of the venue
Where the cake will be displayed
Your cake table and cake stand
Your wedding flowers and overall styling
The proportions of your chosen design
Whether you want a subtle cake or a real centrepiece
Your budget
How much cake you actually want to serve
This is why I don't believe this is a "one size fits all" approach to wedding cakes.
What size wedding cake do I need for 80 guests?
For around 80 guests, a three-tier cake can be a lovely option, but it isn't your only choice.
You could choose a beautifully proportioned three-tier cake with all the tiers made from delicious cake.
Or perhaps you have your heart set on something taller and more dramatic.
In that case, we can look at the design and work out whether additional tiers, taller tiers or dummy tiers would give you the appearance you are looking for.
The important thing is that your cake looks like the cake you dreamed about, rather than simply being the cake a portion chart told you to have.
What size wedding cake do I need for 100 guests?
This is something worth discussing before you decide on your final design.
Some couples want enough cake for every guest.
Others are happy to have a little extra.
Some want to take portions home the following day.
An some couples are having a dessert table or other sweet treats alongside their wedding cake.
There is no right or wrong answer.
The important thing is that we design the cake around your wedding, rather than assuming every celebration needs exactly the same amount of cake.
If you are also considering a dessert table or additional treats, you can explore my Dessert Tables and Treats page for some ideas.
Does the wedding venue affect the size of the cake?
Absolutely?
Your venue can have a surprisingly big influence on the proportions of your wedding cake.
A tall cake can look incredible beneath high ceilings or in a large country house setting.
A more intimate venue might suit a smaller, beautifully detailed cake.
And if you are getting married in a barn or marquee, we can consider how the cake will sit within the wider styling of the room.
I create wedding cakes for venues across Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire, and I always consider the setting when designing a cake.
Your cake shouldn't simply be beautiful on its own.
It should look as though it belongs at your wedding.
How much does the size of the wedding cake affect the price?
The size of your cake is certainly one consideration, but it isn't the only one.
A wedding cake is a handcrafted piece of edible art, and the final investment also reflects the design, ingredients, finishing techniques and amount of handmade detail involved.
For example, a relatively small covered cake with intricate handcrafted sugar flowers can require considerably more time and skill than a larger but much simpler design.
At Cakes by Nina, I have chosen to show the individual prices of cakes throughout my gallery so that couples can see real examples rather than trying to work everything out from a generic price-per-slice calculation.

My gallery also includes a range of designs at different investment levels, from beautifully understated cakes through to highly detailed statement creations.
So, how many tiers should your wedding cake have?
If you take on thing away from this guide, let it be this:
Your guest numbers are a starting point - not a rulebook.
The perfect wedding cake is the one that provides the portions you need whilst also looking beautiful in your venue and reflecting your personal style.
Your may need two tiers.
You may want three.
You may fall completely in love with a spectacular five-tier design.
And that's where bespoke design comes in.
Rather than choosing your cake based solely on how many people are attending, I can help you work out the right combination of tiers, portions, and proportions for you day.
