Wedding Cake Helpful Knowledge
Helpful advice from Cakes by Nina
Choosing your wedding cake should be exciting, not confusing. There is a surprising amount to think about beyond simply choosing a design — how many portions you need, what you should budget, when to book, how your cake will be delivered and cared for, which flowers can be used and even where it should be positioned at your venue.

After many years of designing, baking and delivering wedding cakes, we have put together this straightforward guide to answer some of the questions we are asked most often. There is no complicated jargon and no unnecessary fluff — just practical advice to help you make informed decisions and get the very best from your wedding cake.
Portions
One of the first things to consider is how much cake you actually need.

Wedding cake portions are not always the same as a normal slice of cake at home, and the number of tiers does not automatically determine how many guests your cake will serve. The diameter and height of each tier make a significant difference.

We can help you work out the right combination of cake sizes for your guest numbers, whether you would like enough for everyone to have a portion or simply want a beautiful centrepiece with some cake left over.

If you are unsure, don't worry — this is something we can advise you on when discussing your cake.
Pricing
We believe wedding cake pricing should be clear and honest.

Rather than giving vague "from" prices or broad guidelines that can make budgeting difficult, we provide clear and detailed pricing for our wedding cakes. This means you can get a realistic idea of what one of our bespoke creations is likely to cost before you fall in love with a design that is outside your budget.

The final price will depend on the size of your cake, the number of tiers, the finish, decoration, sugar flowers, handmade details and the level of design and craftsmanship involved.

If you have a budget in mind, tell us from the beginning. We can work with you to create something beautiful that makes the most of it.
Delivery
A wedding cake is not something we simply put in a box and leave at your door.

Your cake is carefully prepared for its journey and transported with the care and attention it needs. Depending on the location and requirements of your wedding, we can deliver, set up and position your cake ready for your celebration
.
Delivery and setup are an important part of the service, particularly with larger or more intricate wedding cakes, and should always be considered when planning your overall cake budget.
Flowers
Flowers are one of the most beautiful ways to personalise a wedding cake, but there are a few things to consider.

Fresh flowers need to be suitable for use with a wedding cake and must be prepared correctly so that the cake and flowers remain safely separated. We can work with your florist or advise you on suitable options.

Alternatively, beautifully handcrafted sugar flowers can be created specifically for your cake. These can be made to match your wedding flowers incredibly closely and can be kept as a lasting memento after the wedding.
Allergies & Dietary Requirements
Please tell us about any allergies or dietary requirements when you enquire.

We are happy to discuss suitable options and will always explain what can and cannot be accommodated. Because we work in a professional kitchen where a variety of ingredients are used, we cannot guarantee an environment completely free from traces of allergens.

If you have a serious allergy, please discuss this with us before booking so that we can make sure you have all the information you need to make an informed decision.
Storage
Every Cakes by Nina wedding cake is baked fresh to order.

If you happen to have cake left over after your wedding, it does not have to go to waste. Once the icing and sugarpaste have been removed, the cake itself can generally be wrapped and frozen so that you can enjoy it at a later date
.
This can be a lovely way to enjoy your wedding cake again after the celebrations have finished.
Venue Advice
Your venue can make a difference to how your cake should be displayed and cared for.

When choosing the position for your cake, think about temperature, direct sunlight, windows, heating, fireplaces and areas where guests are likely to be moving around.

We are always happy to discuss your venue and advise on the best position for your cake. If your venue has a cake table or display area already planned, it is worth checking where this will be positioned before the wedding day.
Seasonal Flowers
If you have your heart set on a particular flower, it is worth checking whether it will naturally be available around your wedding date.

With fresh flowers, seasonality can affect both availability and price. Your florist will be able to advise you on alternatives if necessary.

Sugar flowers and suitable faux flowers give you much more freedom. You don't have to worry about whether your favourite flower is in season, and we can create a design using the flowers and colours you love regardless of the time of year.
Design Inspiration
You really don't need to arrive with a finished cake design.

Our website contains a huge collection of wedding cakes, sugar flowers, handmade details and different styles to give you ideas and inspiration. You can find something you love and use it as a starting point, combine elements from several cakes or simply show us the colours, flowers and overall feeling you are drawn to.

We particularly love creating bespoke cakes, so inspiration does not have to mean copying a design. It is often the starting point for creating something that is completely personal to you.

Take a look through our wedding cake portfolios at The Collections for ideas.
Timelines
Ideally, we recommend booking your wedding cake around 12 months before your wedding date, particularly if you are getting married during a busy wedding season or have a popular Saturday date.

At the moment, our absolute latest recommended booking point is around 6 months before the wedding, although this does not guarantee that we will still have availability.

Popular dates can book considerably further in advance, so the earlier you enquire, the more choice you will have.
That said, it is always worth asking. We sometimes have last-minute cancellations and may unexpectedly have availability for a date that you thought was already fully booked.
Budget Advice
One of the best things you can do when looking for your wedding cake is establish a realistic budget early on.

Wedding cakes are handmade pieces of edible artwork, and the amount of time involved can vary enormously depending on the design. Sugar flowers, intricate piping, handmade figures, delicate details and highly detailed finishes all require additional time and skill.

Because we provide clear and detailed pricing rather than vague guideline prices, we can help you understand what is realistic for the style of cake you are looking for.

If you already know your approximate budget, tell us. It allows us to concentrate on creating the best possible cake within that figure rather than designing something that doesn't work financially.
Caring for Your Cake
Once your cake has arrived at your venue, where it is positioned is extremely important.

Keep it away from windows

During warmer weather, we strongly recommend keeping your cake away from windows and direct sunlight.
Even if your venue is air-conditioned, radiant heat coming through a window can affect the cake, icing and delicate decorations. A beautiful cake can be surprisingly vulnerable to heat from direct sunlight.

Be careful with refrigeration

For cakes finished in sugarpaste, we generally recommend avoiding refrigeration wherever possible.

When a cold cake is removed from the refrigerator and exposed to warmer air, condensation can form on the surface.
This moisture can soften the sugarpaste and may also affect delicate sugar flowers and other decorations.
Your cake should be kept somewhere cool, dry and away from direct heat and sunlight.
If your venue has specific storage arrangements, please speak to us before the wedding so we can advise you on the best option.
Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book my wedding cake?

We recommend around 12 months wherever possible. Six months is currently the latest we recommend enquiring, but availability is never guaranteed at that stage. If your date is approaching, always ask — we do occasionally have cancellations.

Do I need to know exactly what I want?

Absolutely not. You can come to us with a colour palette, your flowers, a few photographs you love or simply an idea of the overall style you are looking for. We can help develop the design from there.
Can you make sugar flowers to match my wedding flowers?
Yes. Sugar flowers can be designed specifically for your wedding and made to complement your real flowers, colour palette and overall styling.

Do I have to use flowers that are in season?

No. Fresh flowers are seasonal, but sugar flowers and suitable faux flowers give you considerably more freedom when choosing your wedding cake design.

Can I freeze leftover wedding cake?

In most cases, yes. As our cakes are baked fresh to order, leftover cake can generally be frozen after removing the icing and sugarpaste. This means you can enjoy your wedding cake again at a later date.
Should my wedding cake go in the fridge?

For sugarpaste-finished cakes, we generally recommend avoiding refrigeration because condensation can form when the cake is removed, potentially making the icing and sugar flowers soft.

Where should my cake be positioned at the venue?

Ideally, somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight, windows, radiators, heaters and other sources of heat. We are happy to advise you on this.

Can you deliver and set up my wedding cake?

Yes. Wedding cake delivery and setup can be arranged, with the exact arrangements depending on your venue, location and cake design.

What if I have a small or large wedding?

That is absolutely fine. We create cakes for intimate weddings through to much larger celebrations and can advise you on the most suitable cake size and number of portions.

What if I have a specific budget?

Tell us. Having a clear budget from the beginning is helpful and allows us to design with that figure in mind. Our detailed pricing means we can give you a realistic idea of what can be achieved.

What if my wedding date is less than six months away?

Please still ask. Although we recommend booking earlier, dates can become available through cancellations and changes to existing bookings. It is always worth checking rather than assuming we are fully booked.
Still have a question?

If there is something you are unsure about, just ask.

There really is no such thing as a silly wedding cake question. Our job is not only to create your cake, but to make the whole process feel straightforward, enjoyable and completely stress-free.
